Crystal Palace Handel Festival 1857 bound volume containing the original programme books for the performances which were held in the week of June 15th 1857. The programmes included The Messiah, Judas Maccabeus and Israel in Egypt. The volume also includes an original handbill advertising the performances three further printed letters concerning the administration of the festival and a proof copy of a printed pamphlet issued in 1856 proposing the festival. Ownership signatures of Henry Sudlow who was clearly a member of the organising committee. Scarce. This was the first musical event held at the Crystal Palace and proved to be such a sensation that the Handel Festivals were held every three years from 1859 (see following lot) until 1926 when Handel was considered to be out-of-date and old-fashioned. The performances in 1857 must have been a spectacle as they involved some 2500 performers. The event was depicted in a famous illustration in the London Illustrated News which showed the enormity of the auditorium |
